Tassels & Fringe

Angled Office Garland

Last week I decided I wanted to try my hand at making some Confetti System-style tassel garlands. I really like the way they look but I DON’T like the $130 price tag, so I figured I’d DIY it. I found a couple tutorials, combined them, used what I liked, ignored the rest and eventually came up with my own technique. I haven’t perfected it yet, but I think I’m close!

The first thing I need was some tissue paper and mylar. I couldn’t decide what colours I wanted to use, so I bought all of them. No, really.

Tissue Paper Colours

Since this picture was taken I’ve actually bought two more colours- a bright orange and a dark purple. I know, I have a problem.

Then, I spent a lot of time turning that into this:

Cut Paper

Can I just say, this paper cutter is INDISPENABLE. I picked it up a couple of weeks ago for $25 at Homesense (a discount housewares store) and I’ve used it so much already! It’s so much faster and easier for this than using scissors, an exacto knife or a rotary cutting tool.

Tissue Paper Cutting

The first garland I made was for Sym’s room, using three colours of tissue paper (white, grey and mint green) and one shade of mylar (silver). I made all the tassles the same size and strung them in a repeating pattern.

Tissue Tassel Garland for Sym

It’s pretty, but not really the look I wanted. Next I wanted to make one for my bedroom, but I don’t have the right colours of paper. Yes, you read that correctly, none of the 23 colours of tissue and mylar are right. Okay, SOME of them are, but I need a turquoise blue and a taupe or greige. YES I AM AWARE THAT I HAVE A PROBLEM.

Instead I decided to make one for the office. Taylor’s side of the office is grey and black (black-brown really, but black is close enough) with a little bit of yellow. My side of the office is grey, yellow and white. I decided to use more yellow and white on my side of the garland and more black on Taylor’s side. I made tassels in five colours of tissue (white, grey, silver grey, yellow and black) and one shade of mylar (silver), and three different sizes (regular, long and mini), and strung them randomly on 3 meters silver cord.

I like the effect of this a lot better, but like I said, my technique still isn’t perfect, so I guess I’ll have to keep making more until I get it right!

Bits & Pieces

Some pictures from this quiet, rainy afternoon:

Monogram

I saw this adorable customizable monogram from The Wedding Chicks on Sometimes Sweet this morning and IMMEDIATELY knew I needed one. I want to put it up in my bedroom (is that cheesy? yes, but I don’t care) but the colours were wrong so I tweaked it a little, and then printed it out on some nice paper I tore out of a sketchbook and trimmed to size.

Penny Hartz

Yesterday I FINALLY set up my new computer. It’s a little different that my old one and it’s taking some getting used to, but so far I love it. The real question is how long can I keep my desk clean? (The answer: probably not long)

Do Work

This purple-on-purple banner is getting ready for a wedding in Los Angeles next month. My motto these days is basically “Always Be Ombre-ing!”

Shop Stickers

Teeny-tiny stickers covered in teeny-tiny bunting.

Dog Friends

Dougal and Georgie are still bffs. I love when they snuggle.

Sym in her Room

Sym had the day off school and spent most of it holed up in her room colouring. She was supposed to have her friend Ali over to play but she had an audition (you might have seen Ali in last Friday’s Fringe episode. Hint: she was the only kid).

Sym's Nails

Sym wanted me to post a picture of her Valentine’s Day manicure to show the colours she chose- normally I’d save this for Monday but I’m too happy about the fact that she stopped biting her nails! We actually had to trim and file them last weekend because they were too long! I’m really proud of her for breaking the habit.

Paper Frog

She got this inflatable paper frog in a Kinder Egg, it’s so odd!

The Nap Room

These paper palm trees were leftover from Sym’s Luau birthday in 2008, but I recently unearthed them and put them up in the nap room.

New Life

Last summer the housepainters stomped all my plants to death, but the remains of my hydrangea somehow survived and it’s putting out little leaves! There’s hope for my garden yet.

Title Redacted

This post is about how I managed to successfully do some of the projects on my list and also finally made a decent smoothie, but any title I could come up with sounded like a tag line in a laxative ad. So.

I managed to successfully do some of the projects on my list! I cleaned off both my craft desk AND my computer desk, but I didn’t stop there: I moved my whole computer to the kitchen so I can finally repaint the top of my desk (something I’ve been putting off for literally months).

Tidy Desk
Clear Desk

Once it’s all done I’ll be able to set up my new computer, hooray! Less exciting, but I also got completely caught up on the dishes, and since Taylor is starting to feel better he took out all the garbage and recycling, so that’s like, FIVE things off my list.

I finally made a decent smoothie! Last year I was really into making smoothies, or TRYING to make smoothies. Unfortunately I had a terrible blender that sucked and I hated it and everything it made was more lumpies than smoothies. Whatever.

LSP

Anyway a few months ago I had some sort of blender-induced rage blackout and threw it away, so since then we’ve been blenderless. In January I started ordering the smoothie fruit assortments from Spud* so Taylor bought us a new, better blender. This one still leaves some lumps but I solved that problem by buying GIANT JUMBO BOBA TEA STRAWS. I got like, 100 of them for $1.20.

Successful Smoothie

The straw & angle make it look tiny but it was 16 ounces of blackberries, blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, a cherry popsicle (homemade, I added it for sweetness), chia seeds, coconut oil and orange juice. Everything but the juice was organic as well. The coconut oil made the giant straws especially great because I could chug the whole thing down before I got grossed out (it’s not bad, but it’s a solid when it’s cold and there’ve been lumps). I’d never tried putting chia seeds in a smoothie before but I did some research and gleaned these tips:

1. Use 1 tbsp of seeds per 8 oz of liquid. Apparently the seeds can absorb a ton of liquid and they’ll form a gel if you use too many O___o
2. Soak the seeds in the liquid for an hour before making the smoothie (easy, if like me you have a blender that can’t deal with frozen fruit and you need to defrost them first. Defrost and soak at the same time!).
3. Don’t leave it sitting around for too long or the seeds will cause it to gel, even if you’ve followed tip #1! Again, this is where the giant straws came in handy.

*idk about these smoothie fruit assortments. The first time I ordered it I got an INTENSE amount of fruit: a pound and a half of blueberries, four mangoes and twenty-one bananas. For $10! It was way too much for us (since only Taylor likes bananas and mangoes) so I made arrangements to go halvsies with Sym’s dad, but then the next time I ordered it I just got 6 ounces of raspberries, one mango and six bananas. WHAT GIVES???? I even checked my old invoice to see if it was a mistake that I got so much the first time but it wasn’t.

Hallelujah

It’s here it’s here our new bed is here!!!

New Dog Bed

It was delivered yesterday afternoon but we weren’t able to set it up until almost 8 o’clock and let me tell you, the wait was A G O N Y. But do you know what ISN’T agony? My back. Yes, one night of sleeping on the new bed and my back already feels 75% better. AMAZING.

The new mattress is about fifty times thicker than the old one so one thing we need to do is buy some new sheets, since we only have one that really fits. Luckily, it’s my favorite one from my favorite bedding store, Bed. I’m bored with my current bedroom colour scheme so I already ordered a new duvet cover so I’ve been looking for colours that will go with it. Right now I’m looking at rhino, taupe and aqua.

New Bedroom Colour Scheme

The dogs have also been enjoying the new bed, but I think Georgie’s favorite was when we pulled the old mattress out and leaned it on the couch. She climbed up and slid down over and over, it was adorable.

Intrepid Georgie

So intrepid!

Dream Life Version Four

Usually when I make these posts it’s because I’ve been obsessing over real estate in North Vancouver. I mean, you can get a WHOLE HOUSE there for under a million dollars! AMAZING. Well this time it’s different- right now I’m obsessing over the Mount Pleasant/Main area of East Vancouver (for those who don’t know, East Vancouver is the east part of Vancouver, North Vancouver is a different city, a suburb of Vancouver).

Vancouver Map

There are a lot of cute/cool shops and restaurants (on Sunday Taylor and I had brunch at a place with MULTIPLE vegetarian options, I felt so spoiled) on Main, although I haven’t often gone out there because taking the bus is a hassle. With the new Canada Line train it’s a lot easier- there are a couple stops where you can just walk over to Main from Cambie. I like to walk on all the side streets and get into a jealous rage about WHY DON’T I HAVE A HOUSE HERE??? Oh, right, because I don’t have any money. There are houses for less than a million though. Like how great is this one???

Glen Drive House

DAT TURRET. Five bedrooms, three fireplaces, a master wing. SOMEONE BUY ME THIS RN. It’s actually a little further east than I like but whatever, I can live with it. $998,000 is less than a million, right?

Or house about renting a house? Only $2,200 a month for this charmer (not really that charming).

13th Ave Rental House

Since I can’t afford to buy or apparently even rent a house in the neighborhood I did the next best thing: I BOUGHT A TICKET IN A CHARITY HOME LOTTERY. The grand prize is 2.4 million dollars in cash (or gold, lol) OR a huge suburban mansion, OR a not-particularly-huge but still nice and well-located house right in the neighborhood I like (plus $200,000 and a couple cars).

Vancouver Prize Home

The drawing is this Thursday and I’m using all my powers of positive thinking to try and win. Of course now that I’ve found that green turreted house I’ll have to decide if I want the prize home OR the cash. WOW MY LIFE IS SO HARD.

Welcome Christmas

A little more of the holiday decorations at my house, this time the foyer.

Foyer Display

Sym drew a panda & bunny dressed for winter to put on my reminders board (which I never actually use for reminders anymore, oops). I put up my Joyeux Noel banner and some red, white and green paper bunting I made last year. I hung up my old white wreath and unearthed the snowman light from the bottom of my Christmas storage bin. The little red felt tree on the right is from Ikea, I love it but haven’t really found a home for it yet. Right now it’s just perched on my Spud grocery bins. PRE-POST UPDATE: I wasn’t able to find somewhere to put the little tree when it was put together, so I took it apart and stuck one half to one of the canvases, and I actually really like how it looks!

Christmas Tree Picture

The green wreath is actually meant to be on my front door, but I haven’t been able to find a hanger for it. So weird, I know I saw millions of them in stores a few weeks ago but now I can’t find anything

Wreath Up Close

I bought a plain artificial wreath and added tiny white ornaments from Ikea (I pulled the tops off and stuck them right onto the ends of the branches), some fake red berries (which I had stuffed in a box for years), and tiny gold leaf garland. Originally I was going to wrap the garland around the wreath, but that looked cruddy so instead I cut it into 4-6″ lengths and tediously twisted it around individual branches of the wreath. Really.

Christmas Dot Garland

I hung this red, green and silver dot garland (more on this in another post) up on the cloud wall just to take a picture, but I think I might leave it there, and make some more for the other birds!

Mrs Fix-It

In case you didn’t know, I love finding old furniture and making it awesome, as evidenced by the fact that I’ve done it exactly once. My desk really is great though!

Found Furniture

Anyway I spotted this little end table in the alley the other night and made Taylor bring it home for me. Right now it’s sitting on the patio, filled with diatomaceous earth (I need to know it’s bedbug-free before I bring it inside) but soon it’ll be painted turquoise (maybe?) and beside my bed.

In other fixer-upper news, this happened this weekend.

Toliet Roll Holder Fail

In case you can’t tell, that’s the remains of the toilet roll holder in the half bathroom. It’s so weird, it isn’t like there was anything really heavy on it or anyone yanking or leaning on it, I wonder why it pulled out of the wall for no reason like that?

Toliet Roll Holder Fail

MAYBE BECAUSE THE BUILDERS DRILLED A GIANT-ASS HOLE FOR ONE OF THE SCREWS AND JUST LEFT IT LIKE THAT??? Ugh it baffles me how terribly put together this place is, like is it REALLY that hard to put up a toilet roll holder? Anyway I think I’m going to get one of those free-standing holders so I can put it closer to the toilet- you can’t tell in these pictures but it’s so far away that the non-diaper-wearing daycare kids can’t reach it, so I always have to get toilet paper for them and it’s preventing them from becoming fully independent, toilet-wise. Of course I’ll have to take the remains of the old holder off the wall, fill the holes and paint it, which is gonna be super fun because I don’t think I have any of that orange paint left. I guess I can get some more when I get the turquoise for the table!

Deck the Halls

Fun with fake plastic trees

Friday was our 2nd Annual Donuts & Wine Christmas Tree Decorating Party (it’s still a party if I only invited one person, right?). I had promised Sym I would make donuts, and I had all these ambitious ideas involving holiday-hued sprinkles and crushed peppermint candies. In the end I was too tired and hungover (remember, I’d been at a hockey game the previous evening) so I just bought some cinnamon sugar donuts and syrup wafer cookies and said GOOD ENOUGH. Also, we’re supposed to have sparkling wine, but Jenn brought over a giant economy-sized bottle of pinot grigio and it was only polite to drink that instead.

Does your dog make too much noise?
Sym has a little purple tree, but last year she took it to her dad’s house instead of putting it up here. This year she’s staying with us for Christmas so we’re having a two-tree holiday. At some point I decided it would be a great idea to fold it in half to make it fit in a bin and I must have really hulked out on it because I couldn’t straighten it out to save my life. I did the best I could, and have it set up so that it’s angled towards the wall so you can’t really tell, but it’s kind of obvious in some of these pictures.

LOL IT IS COMPLETELY ASKEW

Fun with fake plastic trees

The first couple years she had this tree we had really terrible ornaments on it, but I’ve slowly built up a sweet collection of cute donuts, cupcakes and miniature glass balls. She used to have a whole collection of Disney princesses as well but we could only find Sleeping Beauty.

Fun with fake plastic trees

After we helped Sym with her tree we started on the big one. I put the lights on it a week earlier so it was ready for Sym, Jenn, and I to put all the ornaments in place (Taylor just took pictures).

Fun with fake plastic trees

I put it at the end of the wall that separates the living room from the kitchen, right next to my festive holiday fire extinguisher. Safety first!

The dogs were very helpful, but which I mean annoying. Dougal and Georgie kept fighting over her toy pig and bashing into the tree. At one point Dougal stole it and promptly fell asleep with it in his mouth, much to Georgie’s dismay.

Finished!

I mean, except for me going around and rearranging all the ornaments in my typical Christmas control freak fashion. I CAN’T HELP IT I JUST WANT CHRISTMAS TO BE PERFECT.

It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year

I know some people get really offended when people start their Christmas decorating right after Halloween/before American Thanksgiving, but guess what? I’m Canadian, and here in Canada we celebrate Thanksgiving in October, like God and Martin Frobisher intended.

Martin Frobisher
God not pictured

My main excuse for starting my Christmas decorating early is the daycare kids. It seems that every year I have a kid or two who is celebrating their first Christmas, or at least their first Christmas while mobile. I always worry that if I put the tree up with all the decorations in one fell swoop the kids will show up and FREAK OUT: “Look at all these things! I MUST GRAB AND SLOBBER ON THEM!!” So I like to ease them in- I put up the tree and leave it bare for a week, then have it with just lights for a week, and then finally put on the decorations. Plus this gives Claire more time to hung out under the tree, which is pretty much her only joy in life.

Christmas Tree Cat

Of course, there is more to Christmas decorations than just the tree, and I got started on some other displays this past weekend.

Stag & Forest

This snowy forest light from Ikea and silver glitter stag from Urban Barn are perfect on top of the piano.

Santa & the Nativity

The best thing about my Playmobil nativity scene is how Sym adds to it every year from her vast collection of Playmobils. Last year only a little white kitten joined the mix, but this year she’s added a second angel, a hand organ that plays Christmas songs and the fourth Wise Man, Santa Claus, as well as his reindeer. The nativity set (with Wise Men included!) I have is no longer available, although you can buy a newer, fancier version, and separate Wise Men.

Merry Christmas

I’ve been meaning to put up some pictures or something on the big blank wall around the tv, but for now it’s the perfect place to put up my latest glitter banner (check out those fancy letters!), as well as the Perler bead snowflakes Sym and I made a few years ago, some vintage chandelier crystals and tiny white ball ornaments from Ikea, all hung from the ceiling on monofilament.

Snowflakes

I was trying to make it look like it’s snowing, what do you think? Personally I think I need to get better lightbulbs in that room because all the pictures I take in there look atrocious >:/

The Merry Christmas banner is available for order on my etsy shop.

Get To Work

What’s up, internet? I don’t know if anyone has noticed, but I haven’t really been making with the blog posts recently. Like, only two or three posts a week? WHO AM I???

The reason for this is because I have been in a Grade A Funk. Mad and sad and feeling bad, and all I want to do is eat a billion cookies and watch tv. Last year this happened right before Halloween; this year I was so busy at the end of October that it waited for November. I guess the key is to constantly be doing things so that I don’t have time to start feeling miserable.

The perfect thing to brighten my mood right now would be to get going on some serious Christmas crafting, but I have a little problem with that: my craft desk. It looks like this right now.

GROSS DESK

FUN FACT my computer desk ALSO looks like that. Two desks, piled high with mess. The best part is I always always ALWAYS get on Sym’s case to keep her desk clean so she has somewhere to do her work. I think it’s time I start practicing what I preach, I mean MERRY CHRISTMAS and HAPPY HOLIDAYS glitter banners aren’t going to hand-cut their own letters.

Speaking off, check out this sip & see featuring a fancy banner by yours truly! tbh I wasn’t entirely sure what a sip & see was when I made the sign, but I guess it’s a chance for parents to introduce their baby to everyone at once instead of people dropping by constantly when you are all sleep-deprived and unshowered with a messy house. Huh. I wish I’d known about these ten years ago!
