Get To Work

What’s up, internet? I don’t know if anyone has noticed, but I haven’t really been making with the blog posts recently. Like, only two or three posts a week? WHO AM I???

The reason for this is because I have been in a Grade A Funk. Mad and sad and feeling bad, and all I want to do is eat a billion cookies and watch tv. Last year this happened right before Halloween; this year I was so busy at the end of October that it waited for November. I guess the key is to constantly be doing things so that I don’t have time to start feeling miserable.

The perfect thing to brighten my mood right now would be to get going on some serious Christmas crafting, but I have a little problem with that: my craft desk. It looks like this right now.

GROSS DESK

FUN FACT my computer desk ALSO looks like that. Two desks, piled high with mess. The best part is I always always ALWAYS get on Sym’s case to keep her desk clean so she has somewhere to do her work. I think it’s time I start practicing what I preach, I mean MERRY CHRISTMAS and HAPPY HOLIDAYS glitter banners aren’t going to hand-cut their own letters.

Speaking off, check out this sip & see featuring a fancy banner by yours truly! tbh I wasn’t entirely sure what a sip & see was when I made the sign, but I guess it’s a chance for parents to introduce their baby to everyone at once instead of people dropping by constantly when you are all sleep-deprived and unshowered with a messy house. Huh. I wish I’d known about these ten years ago!

Every Body Dance Now

Some pictures from Sym’s birthday dance party on Friday!

I bought disco lights and hung gold glitter fringe all over the living room. I closed most of the blinds and turned off lights to make it more of a dance party atmosphere since it was the middle of the afternoon.

Glitter Table

I put a white plastic table-cloth over the kitchen island, liberally sprinkled it with silver glitter and stars and then covered it with a clear vinyl table-cloth.

IMG_0237

I wanted the kids to have lots of water since they were dancing up a storm. I originally planned on putting lemon slices in the water but I wanted Taylor to be able to drink it so I made cucumber water instead, which weirded everyone out. Clearly they’ve never been to a spa! I also bought fruit sodas made with real juice since I figured they’d be marginally healthier than regular pop, and the kids put Pixi Stix in them. OOPS.

IMG_0232

I know this looks like the candles say “01″ but that’s because Taylor took a picture of the back of the cake!

IMG_0195

Sym opened the presents from her friends first, and then the one from Taylor and me: Dance Central 2! It was perfect: the present WAS the party, and everyone got into it. We have two rules for Dance Central at our house: everybody plays, and no one makes fun of you if you suck.

Even Sym’s dad got into it! At first he was like “nope, no way, I’m not playing,” and when his wife arrived she said the same thing. Six songs later they were both drenched in sweat and she was trying to calculate how much it would cost for an Xbox, Kinect and the game.

This cake looked like an ordinary, poorly decorated cake from the outside (I’m really bad at icing cakes so I just like, PAVED it in silver jimmies), but inside it had a secret.

Chocolate donuts baked into the layers! I was worried this wouldn’t turn out- I had planned on baking a practice cake during the week but with Halloween on Monday and the party on Friday time just got away from me. Luckily it turned out DELICIOUS and was well received by all the guests.

Once all the kids were picked up Sym opened the rest of her presents (from family and pets, haha). She got tons of great stuff, books and Playmobils, Hello Kittys and Monster High Dolls, all her favorite stuff. Her paternal grandparents got her an authentic kimono from Japan and I got to spend Saturday afternoon trying to figure out how to tie it properly. Thank god for instructional youtube videos! It’s a bit big on her but I think my efforts turned out all right.

Saturday was her actual birthday, and she requested pancakes for breakfast and for me to play Playmobils with her.

I was able to comply on the first part, but I had some serious back pain and a killer migraine, so I ended up having to go to bed in the afternoon. It sucked and I was disappointed that I couldn’t spend more time with her on her birthday, but at least I threw her a killer party!

Halloween Wrap-Up

Yesterday was so much fun! I dressed up all day and Sym wore her costume to school. I spent my break (the daycare kids’ naptime) putting up decorations outside because I figured I wouldn’t have time after work, and I was right! The first trick-or-treaters came at around 5:20 and it built steadily all evening- we ran out of candy by 7:30 and I spoke to a woman up the block who had over five hundred kids come by before 8:30! This is really the neighborhood to be in Vancouver’s West End on Halloween night!

Anyway. Pictures!

The dogs were not exempt from dressing up.

Georgie wore her ghost shirt and was miserable about it. Kichou wire his Aloha shirt and I made him a tiny Detroit Tigers hat so he could be Dognum, P.I.

Eggplant Taylor and Dognum, P.I.

Taylor was an eggplant and was very gracious about wearing a purple track suit and silly hat. I’m actually wearing the purple pants right now and they are really comfortable so I guess it wasn’t all bad. This was taken when we were outside giving out candy, I didn’t want to have to keep opening the door every time kids came down the stairs and have the dogs freak out and try to escape so I set out a little outdoor area for use to sit in, with lots of decorations and my iPod stereo blasting my ultimate Halloween party playlist.

Strawberry Me & Ghost Dog

I had my coat on because it was cold and people kept asking if I was a pumpkin. PUMPKINS ARE ORANGE MY COAT IS YELLOW. To my left is this great decoration I made by stuffing some green twinkle lights in a cracked jar (it was the one from my terrarium, which I killed by forgetting to water it, OOPS) and hiding it in the ferns and ivy.

Because the trick-or-treaters started coming so early I didn’t have time to take pictures of all my decorations last night. Most of them are still up so I went out and got some this morning instead. First is the stairs outside my apartment.

Outside Decorations Cobwebs

I wrapped this whole hedge in cobwebs and foil spiders.

Outside Decorations Glitter Skeletons

Some glittery skeletons on the fence.

Outside Decorations Left of Front Door
Outside Decorations Front Door

Most of these decorations were up in the house all week- Sym’s flying pumpkins, my Trick or Treat glitter banner, and the hanging foil decorations. I also put some of those in the trees in the backyard but they are hard to see.

Outside Decorations Backyard

A few years ago it was wet on Halloween night and the whole backyard was churned into a muddy mess. The grass still hasn’t fully recovered so every year I put a fence of bamboo sticks and caution tape around the lawn to keep people off of it.

Outside Decorations Beware
Outside Decorations Just Leave

I made the “Beware” and “Just Leave” signs using the wire frames from some election signs I found vandalized on the side of the road, garbage bags and Sharpie markers. I traced Sym’s and my hands for the bloody handprints on the “Beware” sign, and the “Just Leave” was inspired by the classic Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace

Since all the pumpkins from my carving party had turned to mush already, I quickly carved this toothsome jack-o-lantern and some more little vampires in the afternoon.

Outside Decorations Skeleton & Pumpkins

Of course, now I have to take it all down so I can start decorating for Sym’s birthday party on Friday, and then next week, for CHRISTMAS!!! Just kidding. Sort of.

Hocus Pumpkins

Hocus Pumpkins

Friday night was my Second Annual Pumpkin Carving, Hocus Pocus Watching Party.

Pumpkin Gutting

In the morning Sym and Taylor helped me scoop the goop out of all the pumpkins. I was really dreading this part because I haaaaaaaaaate pumpkin guts but it was quite easy.

Pumpkin Gutting

Fun fact: the pumpkin guts peeled all the dead/dry skin off Sym’s hands.

Pumpkin Carving Party 2011

I’d been putting up decorations all week. I used my Halloween glitter banners, some store-bought things and some crafts by Sym and myself.

I’ve turned into the sort of person who makes gift bags for all my guests.

Pumpkin Carving Party 2011

It’s really Taylor’s fault; when he went to the liquor store for beer he also came back with a mini-bottle of Crystal Head Vodka. OBVIOUSLY I had to go out and get more to share with everybody! I also included a cute mini-pumpkin and a cellophane bag of candy corn and Halloween chocolates.

Sym really wanted me to make the cursed donuts from last year, although I managed to avoid any major baking mishaps. These are just made using brownie mix and black food colouring.

The Donut Decorator

I put Sym in charge of decorating them with white, green, and orange glaze, and white bone & skull, black spider & skull, and green spider sprinkles.

The fruits of everyone’s carving labours:

bottom row l-r: Sailor Moon & a little vampire by me; a toothy grinning face by Taylor, a fangy grinning face by Katrina, and a hammer & sickle by Varia. My friend Bonnie & her son also carved one but they left early.

Pumpkin Carving Party 2011

This was my attempt at one of the Martha Stewart fanged pumpkins that are all over tumblr/pinterest this year. Mine came out looking mentally subnormal. I think it’s the jewelled picks I used for the eyes.

Pumpkin Carving Party 2011

Taylor spent HOURS carving the teeth on his pumpkin, trying to get them thin enough to let light through. Clearly it was worth it though!

I only had half a dozen people over, but last year there were only two, so I basically tripled my turnout. Next year: EIGHTEEN.

Not particularly Halloween-related, but before people arrived I had all three dogs sitting in the beanbag chairs, even Dougal.

AMAZING.

Black Hole

The worst part about living in a basement apartment (besides hearing EV RUH THING my upstairs neighbors are doing and fighting a losing battle against wolf spiders and centipedes) is the darkness. My apartment is UNDERGROUND. The sun is ABOVE GROUND. Do the math.

Luckily this place does have quite a few windows, some rather large, compared to other basement apartments I’ve lived in. The children’s living room, in particular, has a decently-sized window that lets in a lot of light.

Children's Living Room

There would probably be even more light coming in, except right outside that window is the fence of the old pink house next door.

Stunning Vista

That house has actually sold now, and the new owners have been working non-stop to make it habitable- in spite of the million dollar+ asking price, it was apparently a dank, disgusting hellhole that needed to be completely gutted. They’ve torn out the carpets, the walls, the ceilings, the electrical wiring, EVERYTHING, and they’ve also cut down/back a lot of the overgrown plants in their yard. When they first pruned all the trees and bushes, I was amazed! There was so much more light getting into my apartment! I was no longer suffering from the year-round version of SAD that afflicts people who dwell in darkness! Hallelujah!

Two Saturday afternoons ago I was in the backyard talking to my upstairs neighbor about it, about how much brighter my apartment was and how happy I was that the new neighbors had taken care of the garden. Then I went inside and saw this:

Fenced In

They boarded up all the gaps in the fence. It’s 800% darker in here now.

okay :(

Like, I KNOW it’s their fence and they can do what they want with it and have a right to have privacy in the their backyard that they paid an undoubtedly absurd amount of money for, but it still seems like kind of a dick move. And I think they knew it too, because instead of starting at one end and working their way across, they boarded up the gaps to the left of my window, then the gaps to the right of my window, and then when they had nothing else left to board up they did the gaps right in front of my window.

I should ask them to buy me a SAD light :(

No Woman is an Island

Out of all the annoying things in my apartment, one of the most annoying was the kitchen island. The top had an overhang so it’s like you should be able to sit at it, but the overhang was so shallow that it was impossible and/or uncomfortable for anyone over, say, 4’7″. Since I’m 5’9″ and Taylor is 6’4″, it was pretty much unacceptable!

Not a Sick Mess Anymore!New Kitchen Stools

I’d been trying to come up with a cost-effective solution for this problem for a while, and a few weeks back I bought the stools pictured above so it was really time to get to it! On Sunday Taylor and I made a trip to Ikea and I picked up three $9 Vika Amon desk tops. A little time with a cordless drill and a screwdriver and voila!

New Island
New Island

I stupidly didn’t take a proper “before” picture but the old counter was about 75 x 145cm, and the new one is 100 x 180cm. SO MUCH SURFACE AREA I CAN’T HANDLE IT OMG. I’m planning on putting clear vinyl over it for protection and putting a couple brackets for extra support but all in all I’m pretty thrilled with how it turned out!

Some other weekend stuff:

Cocktail Party
Cocktail Party

My friend Mandy sent me green (lime), blue (wildberry) and purplish-brown (chocolate) maraschino cherries and Taylor and I tried some of them in drinks this weekend. He had rum & pineapple juice with a blue cherry and I had gin, St Germain, Rose’s lime cordial and club soda with a green one. To be honest I don’t actually like maraschino cherries so I gave mine to Taylor to eat. They look cool though!

Little Twin Stars World

A few months ago I bought Sym a Re-ment Little Twin Starsblind box toy and she became OBSESSED. I rarely go to the store here that carries them but I happened to be in the neighborhood this weekend so I bought her a couple more and she made this little world for them.

Sym & Little Twin Stars World

Today was the first “day” of school, but there’s no classes; the kids just get their attendance taken so the school can figure out the enrolment. I’m back to work after a lovely long weekend, I’m not super excited about it but OH WELL.

Pets on the Couch

At least there’s pets.

Basement suites aren’t generally known for their stunning views, and the view from my living room window is particularly ugly: the old green mouldering fence of the house next door. Of course, the house is for sale and whoever buys it is likely to tear it down, so the imminent construction site view won’t be very lovely either.

Stunning Vista

I was sick of looking at that ugliness so using some vases, candlesticks, glasses and one empty gin bottle, plus twenty-four dollars’ worth of peonies I made something much lovelier.

When Sym got home from school she added our collection of Tokidoki Unicornos to give it a little something extra.

The little red devil, Pepperino, is new, Taylor picked it up for me on Wednesday when I was having bad day.

Pepperino

Actually this whole week has been terrible, but! I forgot I’d booked all of next week and the following Monday off. WOOO TEN DAY WEEKEND!!

Weekend Wipeout

Friday
Friday night started awesome; I fished work half an hour early and was able to run out and get beer before the hockey game started. Sym and her friend Ali made this great sign for the living room and then went over to Ali’s to play.

Crafting Kids
Go Canucks Go

Of course all the beer I bought inevitably led me into DISASTER and I want to warn you now that if you are faint of heart or easily grossed out STOP SCROLLING or at least scroll very fast until you get to the Saturday part of the post.

During the second intermission I went on a mad scramble to the store for snacks, and as I was hurrying home I injured the CRAP out of my pinky toe. Here’s the thing about my pinky toe: I break it. A lot. I’ve broken it so many times that it basically shatters now if I just look at it funny. But I didn’t break my toe on Friday night; no, I broke my toe last week. What I did to it on Friday night was WORSE.

I was in a big hurry and as I was rounding the corner into the alley I passed by this house whose garden has a lot of rocks in it. Big rocks. Like bigger than bowling balls. Just scattered around the garden and there is one RIGHT on the corner. Now, I mentioned I was hurrying, but did I mention I was wearing flip-flops? And that I was kind of drunk? Well, I was, and as I rounded that corner I just straight up SMASHED that poor broken pinky toe right into the rock.

I managed to hobble home and when I got there I looked at what I’d done and basically I skinned the whole end of my toe. But not skinned it like a skinned knee; skinned it like SKINNED ALIVE. Are you ready?

IT'S SO NASTY

BARF. Like my feet aren’t gross enough already. And nevermind the horrible skinned part, look at what shape it is! That is not a normal toe shape.

ANYWAY. Taylor and I taped it up with a ton of gauze and I did the only thing I could do in that situation: I DRANK MORE. Which led to this:

Saturday

xk2xkg

Yep, that’s me, desperately clinging to sleep on Saturday morning even though I’m surrounded by pestering pets and a husband who thinks we make the perfect photo opportunity.

Eventually I dragged myself out of bed and with enough coffee, toast, Advil and vitamins I was able to kick my hangover in the butt and go to the farmer’s market. I forgot to take a picture of everything I bought but we ate most of it for lunch. I felt like I needed something really healthful to finish curing me, so I made us what Sym likes to call a “Snacky Lunch” of veggies, pitas and dip.

Snacky Lunch

The homous, cherry tomatoes, radishes and cucumber were from the market; the only unpictured item is some mint Oreo fudge which is basically so yummy I don’t even want to eat it because then it’ll just be gone.

Nutrition!

Seriously though, SO GOOD. Bye, hangover!

Sym and I made a plan a few weeks ago that we’d do a craft every Saturday, but then last weekend we came up with a NEW plan that if it was sunny, we’d go to the beach. This Saturday was overcast, so it was a craft day! She has this book of like ~crafts for girls~, and for this weekend she selected a gingerbread house collage. Since I hate to keep things simple I decided it would be better if we made a 3D gingerbread house. Unfortunately we didn’t finish it before her dad picked her up, but we made a good start and we’ll keep working on it this week.

Gingerbread House Decorations

Sym painted lots of little candies, treats and gumdrop people we’re going to cut out and glue onto the house, which I made. I’m really thrilled with how well it turned out, actually.

Little Brown House

I know. I’m amazing. This was actually pretty simple to do, and if anyone is interested in learning how to make one I could throw together a tutorial. Let me know!

Sunday
Sunday was pretty laid back; Taylor and I worked on our ongoing closet-organizing project, ran a few errands and hung out with our dogs. Hope you all had a good (injury-free!) weekend!

Serious Georgie
Silly Georgie

She really is the best.

A Tale of Two Desks

Tiny Triangle Organization

One thing that’s always annoyed for me is that I didn’t really have anywhere to do my crafts. I mean, I did have places to work on them; I was always covering the kitchen island, the dining table, the daycare kids’ dining table, and basically any surface I could find with my projects. The problem was whenever I needed to cook or eat or serve food I’d have to clear those surfaces off. There was never anywhere for me to just leave my stuff out.

UNTIL NOW.

A couple of weekends ago I rearranged my side of the “office,” and using a little drawer unit I picked up at Ikea on Easter and parts of Sym’s old desk (which was also my desk for a while, before I refinished Old Yeller) I made myself a little craft table that fits in right next to my computer desk.
left side:

Old Desk

right side:

New Desk

Awesome, right? I just need to get one of those plastic carpet protectors for rolling chairs so I can just roll from one desk to the other. I’ll be able to glide seamlessly from internetting to crafting. Living the dream, over here. Although the real best part is I no longer have to pack my projects away before they’re done, I can just leave them on the desk. This is especially nice for when I’m making oh idk, stuff out of tiny pieces of paper that tend to blow around when you move your work surface.

Ready to craft!
New Paper

I got a whole bunch of new paper on the weekend so I’m kind of re-inspired to start making micro bunting again.

Too Many Bunting

… because I need more of that. I’ve had all these micro buntings up on this magnet board for a while, but it was just propped up on a shelf and kept falling over and smashing stuff, so when I rearranged the room I put it up beside the window.

Office Corner

I’ve also started using mini-clothespins to put pictures up on the bamboo roller blind over my computer desk. This is the newspaper Sym made me for Mother’s Day.

World's Best Mom

And I put this corkboard up over my craft table. It was cheap and ugly, but I painted the frame to match my yellow desk and stuck all my message garlands up, along with some fairytale creature silly bands Sym gave me.

I Need These

lol I know these are so cheesy but they actually make me feel better when I’m having a stressful day, like yesterday when I smashed a table into my face, splattered spaghetti sauce all over myself, stuck my hand in vomit, and got a handful of hair torn out.

It’s so nice and organized in here now! I love it. Well, my side is at least. Taylor’s side is another story.
