Beautiful Sunday

After what feels like weeks of horrible rainy weather I was happy to wake up today to a (mostly) blue sky.

IMG_1090.jpg

It was so nice out I even wore a dress. WITH BARE LEGS (not pictured).

Taylor on the Train

Today I was determined to bring my camera and not feel dumb about taking pictures. So I bought it, and I took four pictures. FOUR. And one was out of focus because I kind of started to fall over when the train started moving. OOPS. In my defense (for the lack of pictures, not the falling over), Taylor also brought HIS camera, which is big and fancy and takes much nicer pics than my little point and shoot.

Creamsicle Waffles
IMG_1093.jpg

Brunch at Locus on Main Street: creamsicle waffles for me, apple crumble french toast for Taylor.

After eating we did a little window shopping and also some regular shopping (EVERY WEEKEND, I don’t know what’s wrong with me). I picked up new gardening gloves for us both so we can (eventually) get to weeding around the poor stomped and strangled remains of my garden, and some springform pans (including HEART SHAPED omg) so I can attempt making a cheesecake (which is turning into a three-day process for me).

IMG_1104.jpg

One of my favourite things to do whenever we are on the east side is walk down all the little side streets with all the little cute houses and yell WHY AREN’T ANY OF THESE CUTE LITTLE HOUSES MINE??? Like seriously, someone please buy or affordably rent me one. Bonus points if it looks like a tiny castle.

Birthday All Weekend

It was my birthday on Sunday, and we celebrated (sort of) all weekend. Unfortunately even though I’ve made a habit of bringing my camera with me everywhere, I haven’t exactly made a habit of USING it, so there aren’t many pictures.

Friday Night
We were supposed to have dinner and watch a movie, but I felt really sick for some reason so I skipped dinner. We watched the original Hairspray and I got to teach Sym about racism, segregation, and the Civil Rights movement!

Saturday
Sym wanted to make me breakfast in bed, but eating in bed with three dogs is problematical, so I settled for breakfast in the kitchen. Taylor made birthday pancakes, including a unicorn one for me.

Birthday Pancakes

After breakfast Sym and I went out shopping for craft and baking supplies.

Sym Out Shopping

Instead of a cake, Sym and I made Chocolate Chip Cookie/Oreo/Brownie bars.

My piece was topped with a Cake Candelabra!

IMG_0647.jpg

I enjoyed blowing out the candles.

Sunday
Jenn picked Taylor and I up for brunch at Locus, and then she and I went to the Absolute Spa for $75 pedicures (I had a $150 gift card I got as a goodbye gift from a former client). I got OPI’s Animal-istic from the Muppet Collection, it’s so pretty!.

OPI Animalistic Pedicure

They also gave us champagne and chocolate-covered strawberries, too bad we can’t go all the time!

Presents
From Symphony, a giant hand-made card & two bottles of Essie polish: Shine of the Times and Master Plan.

Birthday Card
Essie Shine of the Times & Master Plan

From Taylor, Dominion Intrigue. I got him the original game for Christmas and promised to play it with him when I thought it was a board game, but as it turns out it’s a card game. At first I was worried it would be too complicated or boring or nerdy, but it’s actually really fun!

Dominion Intrigue

We played using some of the cards from this game on Saturday and I DECIMATED him.

From Jenn, a sweet little Rebecca Minkoff pouch.

Beach House Fund

She gave it to me at brunch and I STUPIDLY left it at the restaurant, so when we were on our way to the spa we kicked Taylor out of the car to go back and get it and he had to take the train home. I’M SO MEAN.

I also got some giftcards and money, which are always appreciated, as well as an absurd about of “Happy Birthday!” posts on my facebook, so thank you everyone! Turning thirty-five was actually pretty good!

On My Birthday

Everything’s Comin’ Up Milhouse

Praise tha Lord, January is over. What a total crap of a month! I’m happy to see it go and here’s to hoping February is better (even though it’s off to an inauspicious start as NONE of my clients have paid their fees yet, so I can’t pay my rent).

Here’s a couple of reasons why February is BOUND to be better than January:

1. I’m like, 99% sure we’re getting a new mattress, which I’m also 99% sure will solve 99% of my back problems. Right now we’re sleeping on an old Ikea mattress, which is on top of another old Ikea mattress. It was really comfy at first, but now both mattresses have caved in as I’m sure they aren’t meant to be Princess-and-thePea’ed like that. Anyway today after work we’re going to go test out this one that is on sale for three thousand dollars off the regular price. I’m 99% sure it’ll be like sleeping on a cloud made of angels and money.

2. It’s my birthday this weekend! Since I am lame I’m not having a big party or anything, but I do have some fun activities planned, like brunch and pedicures and baking chocolate chip cookie-oreo-brownie bars instead of a cake.

3. Giveaways galore! Okay, two giveaways. Later this month there will be a fun giveaway on I Love Pugs for all pug enthusiasts, and right now RIGHT NOW only until Friday, you can enter to win a 15-letter custom ombre banner on Sometimes Sweet.

I’m So Ashamed

I can’t believe I forgot this, but today (ok, maybe tomorrow) is Dougal’s birthday! I tried to take a nice birthday picture with him but he flailed around like an idiot and kicked me with like, fifty limbs so I let him go.

The Birthday Dog

Scary stuff. Here he is as an adorable fat baby dog:

Baaaaaaaaaaaaaaby Dougimals

Okay, still a little scary. Anyway. HAPPY 8th BIRTHDAY, DOUGAL!

Year’s End

Don’t worry; this isn’t going to be one of those endless year-in-review posts where I recap every single thing I did this year and post all the same pictures over again. idk why people even make those posts, like if people wanted to see everything you did they could just look at your old blog posts. I mean, that’s what they’re for, right? I’m just gonna talk about a few memorable things.

1. I Got Bangs
… by which I mean I cut them myself, just like when I was in middle school.

Bangs???

I still love them, I wear my hair up a lot and it’s nice not to have it all scraped back from my forehead.

2. I Visited the South

Us on the roof of the Peabody

Before this year, I’d never been to any part of the United States that wasn’t directly adjacent to the Pacific Ocean. Washington, Oregon, California: that’s it. So in March Taylor and I flew to Memphis, Tennessee to spend a week stuffing our faces with meat and booze. We also had connecting flights on this trip (normally the bane of my life) so technically I was in Utah and Minnesota as well.

3. I Quit Eating Meat
This summer I read Eating Animals by Jonathan Safran Foer and I haven’t eaten meat since.

eatinganimals

I’ve also been mostly buying local and/or organic dairy products and eggs. It’s been seven months now, and the only time I REALLY crave meat is when I walk past McDonalds. tbh I don’t even think that counts as meat though.

4. I Moved My Blog

s11webaddress

Once I realized that there were ads on my blog that I wasn’t benefitting from when I was paying for a ~premium~ account, I was like I’M OUTTA HERE. Moving the blog was an endless nightmare of GoDaddy said/Dreamhost said and it didn’t get resolved until a FREAKED OUT all over the internet about it. I guess it’s true what they say: the squeaky wheel gets the grease.

5. I Dyed My Hair Blue

Blue Sunday

My hairstylist was P I S S E D. I don’t really know why I did it, I just thought it would be fun? And it is! I just recoloured it a couple of days ago because it was looking very faded and green.

Curlz MT

It was actually quite easy being green.

6. I Cooked Christmas Dinner
It seems silly to recap something I just posted about four days ago, but it was SUPER important to me that it be a success.

XMas Dinner

I’d never done it before and now that I have I think I might be confident to host other family members at Christmas. Maybe. As long as they don’t want any meat.

Soooo that’s my year. Pretty much the only other thing I did was make a ton of glitter banners, especially in the last couple weeks! Today is the last day of the Cat Aid 25% off sale on my etsy, it finishes tonight at midnight Pacific, so if you’ve been thinking about ordering one NOW IS THE TIME.

One other super important thing that happened this year: Sym turned ten.

Double digits! I can’t believe it! 2001 basically seems like yesterday, what happened to my tiny baby??? She’s so grown up now, maybe it’s time I get a new one…

Top Tips for the Carsick

I came up with the idea for this post in April, and started writing it in June. Then I saved it as a draft and never looked at it again until this weekend, when Taylor’s and my trip to Ikea ended in me making him drop me off a block and a half early because I knew I wouldn’t be able to make the last two turns without barfing everywhere.

I have always always always been prone to carsickness, ever since I was a little kid. It sucked because my parents always hated stopping the car so I could puke on the side of the road so I heard a lot of “Just sing a song, then you won’t feel sick anymore” and “We have one of those anti-static strips on the car so it’s scientifically impossible for you to be carsick.” Cut to me crouched in the dirt on the side of the Malahat on Vancouver Island, barfing my guts out. Cut to me sprawled across my sister’s lap with my head stuck out the window, puking all the way from LAX to Anaheim. Cut to me spewing on some poor unsuspecting guy’s jacket when I couldn’t get off a bus in Horseshoe Bay in time. Cut to me yakking in the parking lot at a scenic overlook 9,000 feet up Haleakala in Maui. CUT TO ME VOMITING EVERYWHERE.

Tanie & Sym on Haleakala
I looks so happy because I just VOMITED EVERYWHERE

Now I have my own kid who is also prone to carsickness, and I try to be very sympathetic with her because I know how it feels. Maybe it’s annoying to have to stop the car and pull over on the side of highways everywhere so a carsick child can walk it off and spit bile in the grass, but would it be less annoying to clean vomit out of the upholstery? I don’t think so!

Over the years I’ve been working on developing a system for FOOLPROOF CARSICKNESS TREATMENT AND PREVENTION and after painstaking research on roadtrips and throughout pregnancies (morning sickness is a great carsickness substitute) I’ve come up with my Top Tips for the Car Sick.

Ginger Gravol

1. Gravol Ginger tablets
Regular Gravol/Dramamine/motion sickness pills make you sleepy. Ginger Gravol is made from ginger (duh), which prevents carsickness without drowsiness, which is great if you have to navigate, or take care of a carsick kid, or function as a human being once you reach your destination. These pills are small and easy to swallow, which makes them great for Sym as well (normal Children’s Gravol pills are big and need to be chewed up, and she doesn’t like the flavours). You could also try ginger gum or tea but I think they taste disgusting, and things that taste disgusting make me want to throw up, which pretty much defeats the purpose of anti-nausea products.

Jolly Ranchers

2.Jolly Rancher candies
You know that weird gross pre-barf taste you get in your mouth when you’re about to be carsick? You need something that will get rid of it without putting anything in your stomach. Some people like gum for this but when it loses its flavour it gets gross, and having to spit anything out when you already feel like puking is a recipe for puking. Jolly Ranchers, the original hard candies, are PERFECT. The fruit flavours totally overwhelm the sick taste without being overly sweet. Whenever we go for long car trips with Sym I put a big bag of them in my purse and we suck on them the whole way. SORRY, TEETH :( I know all that sugar isn’t good for you, but neither is being constantly bathed in stomach acid.

Hickory Sticks

3. Hickory Sticks
I discovered the anti-nausea properties of these hickory-smoked shoestring potato sticks when I was pregnant with Sym. The starchiness of the potatoes calms your poor acidic tummy, and I don’t know what it is about the hickory flavour, but it WORKS.

Drinking Water

4. Water
LOTS of water. In spite of my best efforts, Sym and I do still end up puking sometimes, and the only thing worse than throwing up is throwing up straight bile, or a big dry glob of masticated Hickory Sticks. Drinking lots of water means if you do vomit it’ll come up quickly and easily, plus the added bonus of more pee stops means you’ll have more chances to walk it off. Note: please bring your own reusable water bottles instead of being an environment trashing bottled water drinker. Anyway the last time I bought bottled water (because I forgot my water bottle at home) it tasted like vulcanized rubber. EW.

Every Body Dance Now

Some pictures from Sym’s birthday dance party on Friday!

IMG_0243
IMG_0331

I bought disco lights and hung gold glitter fringe all over the living room. I closed most of the blinds and turned off lights to make it more of a dance party atmosphere since it was the middle of the afternoon.

Glitter Table

I put a white plastic table-cloth over the kitchen island, liberally sprinkled it with silver glitter and stars and then covered it with a clear vinyl table-cloth.

IMG_0237

I wanted the kids to have lots of water since they were dancing up a storm. I originally planned on putting lemon slices in the water but I wanted Taylor to be able to drink it so I made cucumber water instead, which weirded everyone out. Clearly they’ve never been to a spa! I also bought fruit sodas made with real juice since I figured they’d be marginally healthier than regular pop, and the kids put Pixi Stix in them. OOPS.

IMG_0232

I know this looks like the candles say “01″ but that’s because Taylor took a picture of the back of the cake!

IMG_0195

Sym opened the presents from her friends first, and then the one from Taylor and me: Dance Central 2! It was perfect: the present WAS the party, and everyone got into it. We have two rules for Dance Central at our house: everybody plays, and no one makes fun of you if you suck.

Even Sym’s dad got into it! At first he was like “nope, no way, I’m not playing,” and when his wife arrived she said the same thing. Six songs later they were both drenched in sweat and she was trying to calculate how much it would cost for an Xbox, Kinect and the game.

This cake looked like an ordinary, poorly decorated cake from the outside (I’m really bad at icing cakes so I just like, PAVED it in silver jimmies), but inside it had a secret.

Chocolate donuts baked into the layers! I was worried this wouldn’t turn out- I had planned on baking a practice cake during the week but with Halloween on Monday and the party on Friday time just got away from me. Luckily it turned out DELICIOUS and was well received by all the guests.

Once all the kids were picked up Sym opened the rest of her presents (from family and pets, haha). She got tons of great stuff, books and Playmobils, Hello Kittys and Monster High Dolls, all her favorite stuff. Her paternal grandparents got her an authentic kimono from Japan and I got to spend Saturday afternoon trying to figure out how to tie it properly. Thank god for instructional youtube videos! It’s a bit big on her but I think my efforts turned out all right.

Saturday was her actual birthday, and she requested pancakes for breakfast and for me to play Playmobils with her.

I was able to comply on the first part, but I had some serious back pain and a killer migraine, so I ended up having to go to bed in the afternoon. It sucked and I was disappointed that I couldn’t spend more time with her on her birthday, but at least I threw her a killer party!

Purple Babby

… I had purple hair and a brand-new purple baby. Now I have a giant tween who is playing Wii Sports Resort and yelling “I’M NAILING THIS, SUCKAAAAAAAS!”

Her birthday party was yesterday after school and was UH MAY ZING, I’ll do a proper post about it soon but right now the birthday girl demands pancakes.

Hocus Pumpkins

Friday night was my Second Annual Pumpkin Carving, Hocus Pocus Watching Party.

Pumpkin Gutting

In the morning Sym and Taylor helped me scoop the goop out of all the pumpkins. I was really dreading this part because I haaaaaaaaaate pumpkin guts but it was quite easy.

Pumpkin Gutting

Fun fact: the pumpkin guts peeled all the dead/dry skin off Sym’s hands.

Pumpkin Carving Party 2011

I’d been putting up decorations all week. I used my Halloween glitter banners, some store-bought things and some crafts by Sym and myself.

It’s really Taylor’s fault; when he went to the liquor store for beer he also came back with a mini-bottle of Crystal Head Vodka. OBVIOUSLY I had to go out and get more to share with everybody! I also included a cute mini-pumpkin and a cellophane bag of candy corn and Halloween chocolates.

Sym really wanted me to make the cursed donuts from last year, although I managed to avoid any major baking mishaps. These are just made using brownie mix and black food colouring.

The Donut Decorator

I put Sym in charge of decorating them with white, green, and orange glaze, and white bone & skull, black spider & skull, and green spider sprinkles.

bottom row l-r: Sailor Moon & a little vampire by me; a toothy grinning face by Taylor, a fangy grinning face by Katrina, and a hammer & sickle by Varia. My friend Bonnie & her son also carved one but they left early.

Pumpkin Carving Party 2011

This was my attempt at one of the Martha Stewart fanged pumpkins that are all over tumblr/pinterest this year. Mine came out looking mentally subnormal. I think it’s the jewelled picks I used for the eyes.

Pumpkin Carving Party 2011

Taylor spent HOURS carving the teeth on his pumpkin, trying to get them thin enough to let light through. Clearly it was worth it though!

I only had half a dozen people over, but last year there were only two, so I basically tripled my turnout. Next year: EIGHTEEN.

Not particularly Halloween-related, but before people arrived I had all three dogs sitting in the beanbag chairs, even Dougal.

AMAZING.

Fair Play

Instead of playing Dance Central for Family Fun Friday, this week Taylor, Sym and I went to The Fair at the PNE. It was pretty much the most fun ever; we ended up staying for five hours! We saw the Superdogs, ate all the things, played some games, went on some rides… I think it was the most fun I’ve ever had there!

My only complaints were:
1. There were NO deep-fried jelly beans this year! The website said there was so I was very disappointed.
2. Both Taylor and Sym are chickens so neither of them would go on the roller coaster or ferris wheel with me. Sym would only go on the kiddie rides and Taylor wouldn’t go on anything! Hopefully next year Sym is a little braver, she’s already tall enough to go on everything so she just needs to courage up!
