Birthday All Weekend

It was my birthday on Sunday, and we celebrated (sort of) all weekend. Unfortunately even though I’ve made a habit of bringing my camera with me everywhere, I haven’t exactly made a habit of USING it, so there aren’t many pictures.

Friday Night
We were supposed to have dinner and watch a movie, but I felt really sick for some reason so I skipped dinner. We watched the original Hairspray and I got to teach Sym about racism, segregation, and the Civil Rights movement!

Saturday
Sym wanted to make me breakfast in bed, but eating in bed with three dogs is problematical, so I settled for breakfast in the kitchen. Taylor made birthday pancakes, including a unicorn one for me.

Birthday Pancakes

After breakfast Sym and I went out shopping for craft and baking supplies.

Sym Out Shopping

Instead of a cake, Sym and I made Chocolate Chip Cookie/Oreo/Brownie bars.

My piece was topped with a Cake Candelabra!

I enjoyed blowing out the candles.

Sunday
Jenn picked Taylor and I up for brunch at Locus, and then she and I went to the Absolute Spa for $75 pedicures (I had a $150 gift card I got as a goodbye gift from a former client). I got OPI’s Animal-istic from the Muppet Collection, it’s so pretty!.

OPI Animalistic Pedicure

They also gave us champagne and chocolate-covered strawberries, too bad we can’t go all the time!

Presents
From Symphony, a giant hand-made card & two bottles of Essie polish: Shine of the Times and Master Plan.

Birthday Card

From Taylor, Dominion Intrigue. I got him the original game for Christmas and promised to play it with him when I thought it was a board game, but as it turns out it’s a card game. At first I was worried it would be too complicated or boring or nerdy, but it’s actually really fun!

Dominion Intrigue

We played using some of the cards from this game on Saturday and I DECIMATED him.

From Jenn, a sweet little Rebecca Minkoff pouch.

Beach House Fund

She gave it to me at brunch and I STUPIDLY left it at the restaurant, so when we were on our way to the spa we kicked Taylor out of the car to go back and get it and he had to take the train home. I’M SO MEAN.

I also got some giftcards and money, which are always appreciated, as well as an absurd about of “Happy Birthday!” posts on my facebook, so thank you everyone! Turning thirty-five was actually pretty good!

On My Birthday

Everything’s Comin’ Up Milhouse

Praise tha Lord, January is over. What a total crap of a month! I’m happy to see it go and here’s to hoping February is better (even though it’s off to an inauspicious start as NONE of my clients have paid their fees yet, so I can’t pay my rent).

Here’s a couple of reasons why February is BOUND to be better than January:

1. I’m like, 99% sure we’re getting a new mattress, which I’m also 99% sure will solve 99% of my back problems. Right now we’re sleeping on an old Ikea mattress, which is on top of another old Ikea mattress. It was really comfy at first, but now both mattresses have caved in as I’m sure they aren’t meant to be Princess-and-thePea’ed like that. Anyway today after work we’re going to go test out this one that is on sale for three thousand dollars off the regular price. I’m 99% sure it’ll be like sleeping on a cloud made of angels and money.

2. It’s my birthday this weekend! Since I am lame I’m not having a big party or anything, but I do have some fun activities planned, like brunch and pedicures and baking chocolate chip cookie-oreo-brownie bars instead of a cake.

3. Giveaways galore! Okay, two giveaways. Later this month there will be a fun giveaway on I Love Pugs for all pug enthusiasts, and right now RIGHT NOW only until Friday, you can enter to win a 15-letter custom ombre banner on Sometimes Sweet.

I’m So Ashamed

I can’t believe I forgot this, but today (ok, maybe tomorrow) is Dougal’s birthday! I tried to take a nice birthday picture with him but he flailed around like an idiot and kicked me with like, fifty limbs so I let him go.

The Birthday Dog

Scary stuff. Here he is as an adorable fat baby dog:

Baaaaaaaaaaaaaaby Dougimals

Okay, still a little scary. Anyway. HAPPY 8th BIRTHDAY, DOUGAL!

Year’s End

Don’t worry; this isn’t going to be one of those endless year-in-review posts where I recap every single thing I did this year and post all the same pictures over again. idk why people even make those posts, like if people wanted to see everything you did they could just look at your old blog posts. I mean, that’s what they’re for, right? I’m just gonna talk about a few memorable things.

1. I Got Bangs
… by which I mean I cut them myself, just like when I was in middle school.

Bangs???

I still love them, I wear my hair up a lot and it’s nice not to have it all scraped back from my forehead.

2. I Visited the South

Us on the roof of the Peabody

Before this year, I’d never been to any part of the United States that wasn’t directly adjacent to the Pacific Ocean. Washington, Oregon, California: that’s it. So in March Taylor and I flew to Memphis, Tennessee to spend a week stuffing our faces with meat and booze. We also had connecting flights on this trip (normally the bane of my life) so technically I was in Utah and Minnesota as well.

3. I Quit Eating Meat
This summer I read Eating Animals by Jonathan Safran Foer and I haven’t eaten meat since.

eatinganimals

I’ve also been mostly buying local and/or organic dairy products and eggs. It’s been seven months now, and the only time I REALLY crave meat is when I walk past McDonalds. tbh I don’t even think that counts as meat though.

4. I Moved My Blog

s11webaddress

Once I realized that there were ads on my blog that I wasn’t benefitting from when I was paying for a ~premium~ account, I was like I’M OUTTA HERE. Moving the blog was an endless nightmare of GoDaddy said/Dreamhost said and it didn’t get resolved until a FREAKED OUT all over the internet about it. I guess it’s true what they say: the squeaky wheel gets the grease.

5. I Dyed My Hair Blue

Blue Sunday

My hairstylist was P I S S E D. I don’t really know why I did it, I just thought it would be fun? And it is! I just recoloured it a couple of days ago because it was looking very faded and green.

Curlz MT

It was actually quite easy being green.

6. I Cooked Christmas Dinner
It seems silly to recap something I just posted about four days ago, but it was SUPER important to me that it be a success.

XMas Dinner

I’d never done it before and now that I have I think I might be confident to host other family members at Christmas. Maybe. As long as they don’t want any meat.

Soooo that’s my year. Pretty much the only other thing I did was make a ton of glitter banners, especially in the last couple weeks! Today is the last day of the Cat Aid 25% off sale on my etsy, it finishes tonight at midnight Pacific, so if you’ve been thinking about ordering one NOW IS THE TIME.

One other super important thing that happened this year: Sym turned ten.

IMG_0259

Double digits! I can’t believe it! 2001 basically seems like yesterday, what happened to my tiny baby??? She’s so grown up now, maybe it’s time I get a new one…

Every Body Dance Now

Some pictures from Sym’s birthday dance party on Friday!

IMG_0331

I bought disco lights and hung gold glitter fringe all over the living room. I closed most of the blinds and turned off lights to make it more of a dance party atmosphere since it was the middle of the afternoon.

Glitter Table

I put a white plastic table-cloth over the kitchen island, liberally sprinkled it with silver glitter and stars and then covered it with a clear vinyl table-cloth.

IMG_0237

I wanted the kids to have lots of water since they were dancing up a storm. I originally planned on putting lemon slices in the water but I wanted Taylor to be able to drink it so I made cucumber water instead, which weirded everyone out. Clearly they’ve never been to a spa! I also bought fruit sodas made with real juice since I figured they’d be marginally healthier than regular pop, and the kids put Pixi Stix in them. OOPS.

IMG_0232

I know this looks like the candles say “01″ but that’s because Taylor took a picture of the back of the cake!

IMG_0195

Sym opened the presents from her friends first, and then the one from Taylor and me: Dance Central 2! It was perfect: the present WAS the party, and everyone got into it. We have two rules for Dance Central at our house: everybody plays, and no one makes fun of you if you suck.

Even Sym’s dad got into it! At first he was like “nope, no way, I’m not playing,” and when his wife arrived she said the same thing. Six songs later they were both drenched in sweat and she was trying to calculate how much it would cost for an Xbox, Kinect and the game.

This cake looked like an ordinary, poorly decorated cake from the outside (I’m really bad at icing cakes so I just like, PAVED it in silver jimmies), but inside it had a secret.

Chocolate donuts baked into the layers! I was worried this wouldn’t turn out- I had planned on baking a practice cake during the week but with Halloween on Monday and the party on Friday time just got away from me. Luckily it turned out DELICIOUS and was well received by all the guests.

Once all the kids were picked up Sym opened the rest of her presents (from family and pets, haha). She got tons of great stuff, books and Playmobils, Hello Kittys and Monster High Dolls, all her favorite stuff. Her paternal grandparents got her an authentic kimono from Japan and I got to spend Saturday afternoon trying to figure out how to tie it properly. Thank god for instructional youtube videos! It’s a bit big on her but I think my efforts turned out all right.

Saturday was her actual birthday, and she requested pancakes for breakfast and for me to play Playmobils with her.

I was able to comply on the first part, but I had some serious back pain and a killer migraine, so I ended up having to go to bed in the afternoon. It sucked and I was disappointed that I couldn’t spend more time with her on her birthday, but at least I threw her a killer party!

Ten Years Ago

Purple Babby

… I had purple hair and a brand-new purple baby. Now I have a giant tween who is playing Wii Sports Resort and yelling “I’M NAILING THIS, SUCKAAAAAAAS!”

Her birthday party was yesterday after school and was UH MAY ZING, I’ll do a proper post about it soon but right now the birthday girl demands pancakes.

Huge Post of Epicness

I thought about doing a bunch of separate posts with all the stuff I’ve been meaning to blog about this week, but then I though EFF IT so now you get this huge post of epicness! Enjoy!

Popsicles!

Popsicle Party Banner

First of all, even though I haven’t been posting them, I HAVE been making popsicles.

Orange Popsicle

Fresh squeezed orange juice popsicles! These were Sym’s pick, and quite delicious, although A LOT of work.

Blackberry Smoothie Popsicle

Leftover blackberry smoothie popsicles! I made these with the smoothie that Sym didn’t finish and I accidentally almost turned into jam.

Cherry Popsicle

Super-sweet cherry syrup popsicles! I don’t remember what I made this cherry syrup for, I think I just had some cherries that were getting old? WHO KNOWS? I think I must have put in a ton of sugar though, these were INTENSELY SWEET.

Arts & Crafts!
I’ve been making some really fantastic glitter banners and friendship bracelets recently. I did a Sailor Moon-themed craft swap with Rhiannon, and made her a banner of Luna, Diana and Artemis’ heads

Sailor Moon Cat Glitter Banner

… and Outer Senshi friendship bracelets.

Sailor Senshi Bracelets

I’m very excited to see what she’s made for me, so look for a post on that in the future!

I’m also really pleased with the banner I made for my friend Sonia, which has her name in Hindi. I’ve had people ask me before why I don’t use pre-cut letters and shapes for my banners, and this is why.

Sonia

Don’t forget to “like” my shop on facebook and remember, there’s less than a week left to get 15% off your order with the code UNICORN15

With the other friendship bracelets I’ve made recently, I’ve been experimenting with metallic embroidery floss. It’s tricky to use- you have to knot it fairly tightly and that tends to make the bracelets curl up on themselves. I’ve found using a mix of half-metallic and half-regular works best.

Metallic Friendship Bracelets

The blue and silver one on the right was my favourite, but I lost it on Wednesday night, cry cry. Hopefully someone found it and gave it a good home!

Sym's Mini Arm Party

These I made for Sym, you can see here that I put chains and clasps on them instead of just tying them on, except I’m not super adept at it yet and they sometimes fall apart (which is how I think I lost my blue one). I still have a couple more that I made for myself, a purple and gold one, and an all-gold one with vintage aurora borealis crystal and gold-tone metal filigree beads (the later aren’t visible), pictured here with my silver Tiffany bracelet and my brand-new and amazing evil eye bracelet from Hippie Speedball.

Vacation!
Seeing as how I’ve been on vacation this week, I managed to find time for a quick getaway to New York.

Me in New York

OH WAIT NO I DIDN’T. But while I was out shopping on Wednesday I stumbled across my absolutely favorite show in the history of tv being filmed. THAT’S RIGHT, FRINGE!! Unfortunately there was no Joshua Jackson BUT I stood across the street like a giant dork and took pictures of Anna Torv and John Noble, aka Olivia Dunham and Walter Bishop, shooting a short scene where they walked fifty feet up Burrard street. Over and over again. tbh working on a tv show looks boring as hell.

Vancouver Canadians!

Sunset Over Nat Bailey Stadium

Later that Day Taylor and I headed out to Nat Bailey Stadium (or I guess it’s now Scotiabank Field and Nat Bailey Stadium? Whatever) to catch a Canadians game. We’d been a couple of times before, but this was the first time I’d ever paid for tickets, and they are super affordable. Unfortunately the season is basically over, but next summer I definitely want to go to more games. If you are like me and like sports you can scream at while you drink beer, then this is definitely for you.

Taylor Turns 32!

Happy Birthday Taylor Banner

Of course, this weeks most important event was yesterday, when my darling and adorable husband celebrated his thirty-second birthday. He’s been working from home this week, so he slept for most of the day while Sym and I baked and hung decorations.

Cake and PresentsSparklers!

This is the second layer cake I’ve made (the first was the rainbow cake earlier this summer) and it turned out really well! I still need to work on making my icing look pretty, but the inside was SPECTACULAR.

Blue Gradient Cake

We had a yummy dinner of our traditional Thursday night poutine & Dr Peppers, then presents, then cake & milk, and after Sym went to bed, tv shows and beer.

The Birthday Man

Love him ♥

Anyway, that’s pretty much what I’ve been up to this week! On Monday it back to work for me (incidentally, today is the fifth anniversary of Starlight Family Childcare! Also the longest I’ve ever held a job, haha), but at least I still have this afternoon and the weekend of freedom left!

Birthday Weekend

Two Dogs
these dogs love birthdays

It was my birthday this Saturday, and although I didn’t do anything particularly special, I still had a really nice weekend.

Friday Night was our regular Dance Central night, although our friends came over as well, and Taylor bought me a really yummy cake (which unfortunately did not last long enough to be photographed).

Plaid Family
plaid is cool

On Saturday I’d promised Sym we could go to the art/craft supply store to buy stuff to make Valentine’s Day cards for the kid in her class. Originally I’d planned to cut out my own animal shapes from velour paper, but then we saw these in the scrapbooking section so I decided to take the lazy way out and bought these instead. I know, I’m disappointed in myself as well.

Valentine Animals

Before that I opened my gift from Sym- a jar of Nutella (did you know Saturday was World Nutella Day? It was) and this cute little bear she made with her stepmom.

Symmie Bear & I
Sym & Georgie

After Sym went to her dad’s house, Taylor and I spent Saturday night being super lazy- we just laid around on the couch watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer and eating leftover pizza and birthday cake. On Sunday morning he let me sleep in, although I wish he hadn’t- I had a difficult time falling asleep last night and I also missed spending the time with him- he has to go to bed on Sunday afternoons since his Monday shift starts at midnight, a fact I really really resent. REALLY.

Taylor & Georgie
I missed hours of this!

Instead of tidying the house, I ended up spending Sunday evening watching more Buffy and doing nothing, which was a bad idea since I ended up sleeping through my alarm this morning and woke up two minutes AFTER I was supposed to start work to a messy house and my first client already at the door. Oopsies. As a result I’m very tired and cranky today, even after having my coffee and Nutella toast & orange juice.

Nutella Toast & Orange Juice

Now, I had told Taylor he didn’t need to get my any birthday gifts this year, but through a series of weird glitches a refund meant for him ended up going onto MY credit card, so he told me that could be my gift, and I spent it the most reasonable way I knew how: SHOES.

footweartrio

New rainboots, snowboots and heels are all winging their way to my house as I type. Now, the rainboots I definitely need now since it’s bound to be soggy all spring. The snowboots not so much, but they were on sale and I’d be super made at myself if I didn’t buy them and had to pay full price next winter. The heels I’m especially pleased about- they are actually identical to the turquoise shoes I bought for my wedding, which I love but never wear because they’re. Well. Turquoise! I saw them in black a few months after I got married and wanted them, but they were $515 and I couldn’t justify/afford that for black heels, so I’d actually been thinking of having my turquoise ones dyed. I happened to be browsing the Gravity Pope website last week and lo and behold, two years later and they still have them, only now they’re on clearance for $127. WHAT. It’s especially fortuitous because Georgie chewed up my last pair of black heels a few months ago and I hadn’t replaced them yet. So like, SCORE.

Anyway, I hope you all had a good weekend celebrating my birthday & Nutella Day (there was nothing else going on, right?), and thank you to everyone out there in internet land who sent birthday wishes my way. I love you girls so much, you keep me young.

Mail Call

Everyone loves getting awesome stuff in the mail! I hadn’t actually checked my mailbox in few so it was stuffed with awesome things.

A birthday card, scratch tickets and $$$ from my MILs. A musical card.

A selection of goodies from Jessica. We did an arts & crafts trade- I sent her some bunting and she sent my some Mickey Girl stickers, doily Valentines and a “Homesick” print.

Disaster Life Goodies

Thanks Jessica!

And the last thing I’m not posting a picture of because it’s like, official business stuff BUT I received a letter from the health authority that resolved some kind of terrible and stressful work issues I’d been having. PHEW!
