Last Day of School

Today is Sym’s last day of fourth grade. The year started out a little rocky- she moved from the Annex school, which is only about a hundred students K-3, to the main school, which is 400 student K-7. She was pretty nervous at first, not wanting to make new friends and struggling with her work a little (her first report card this year was her worst ever). She pulled it together, made lots of new friends and received certificates for fine arts achievements and her science fair project earlier this year, and at the end of the year awards ceremony she got two more, for good citizenship and the honour roll.

Her dad and I usually buy her a little end-of-school gift, so this year I picked out a new book, and some fun sparkly treasures from the dollar store- cheap rings with green stones (green is our favourite colour) and some plastic diamonds.

This is the first summer I haven’t signed her up for day camp since the summer after kindergarten. Actually, I DID sign her up for day camp that summer but a strike closed the community center and cancelled the camp. Anyway. I’m hoping to find fun things to keep her occupied for the next two months while I’m working so she doesn’t end up watching tv for eight hours a day, so if anyone has any ideas send them my way!

  1. I remember when I was in the 5th grade, I would go to my friend’s house and her mother would plop us down in the basement with a table full of mini clothespins, the old fashioned kind, fabric scraps, rick rack, googly eyes, pipe cleaners, yarn, pom poms…you get the picture. We’d make dolls for hours on end. I probably would have enjoyed doing it as a solitary activity as well.
