kitty black cat

no-name cat

There are a lot of fluffy black cats in my neighborhood and they all like to hang around at my office window. I mean, there ARE other kids of cats as well, mostly stripey, and my upstairs neighbors have a fluffy silly goose of a ragdoll who keeps trapping himself outside and then meows at my window until I rescue & return him to his owners. But mostly it’s the fluffy black cats who come to my window to ask for pets.

There is Smokey, a big tom belonging to my neighbors two houses west.

There is Lola, a medium molly belonging to my neighbors two houses east.

There is a little no-name cat that I think is a female (due to her size) that I have no idea where she lives or who she belongs to.

Smokey likes to pretend he is unfriendly & too cool for pets but he is a really a hair baby. Lola is a little skittish but also loves pets, and the no-name cat is SO FRIENDLY OMG. She and Lola will both come right inside onto the windowsill or even climb down onto my desk. Gwen loves it when this happens because Gwen loves any opportunity to pet a kitty. She’ll come running over breathlessly squeaking “hi! hi! hi kitty black cat!” and will pet and pet and pet those cats as long as they will let her. The other day she actually tried to climb out the window after the no-name cat, she loves petting them so much.

All this talk of fluffy black cats may have you thinking “hey Tanie, don’t YOU have a fluffy black cat?” And you would be correct, I DO still have a cat, and if you follow me on instagram you would have seen me posting a lot more pictures of him recently.

Mark Fluffalo is still very shy and very skittish, but he freakin’ LOVES attention, and his love of attention is starting to become stronger than his love of hiding under the furniture all the time. Two times recently he didn’t run under the bed when I walked into the bedroom. When he is under the bed I can reach under there and pet him and he doesn’t hiss or scratch me anymore. The other night he cuddled next to me on the couch for a really long time and was so chill I was even able to trim five of his claws before he bit me (not hard). It’s a kind of miracle. It’s also miraculous how gentle and patient he almost always is with Gwen. He is less scared of her than anyone else so sometimes the only way to pet him is to send Gwen in first because he won’t run away from her. It’s a pretty good trick, and she definitely deserves a lot of the credit for taming this savage beast.

teeny halloweeny: pee-wee herman

idk if I’ve mentioned it before but Gwen REALLY likes Pee-wee Herman. Pee-wee’s Playhouse is one of only three kids shows she’ll watch, so when I was trying to figure out her Halloween costume for this year I thought Pee-wee would be a good choice. I’m not actually sure if she remembers about Halloween from last year; her speech is still delayed (she is making lots of progress but has not yet caught up) so sometimes it’s hard to figure what things she understands and what things are a mystery to her since she can’t express herself. But I asked her if she wanted a Pee-wee suit and she said “yah,” so Pee-wee it is!

pee-wee-herman-oween

on Pee-wee’s left: grey jersey blazer, H&M, grey leggings, Old Navy; white uniform shirt, Old Navy; white canvas slip-ons, Vans; on Pee-wee’s right: grey blazer & suit pants, H&M; classic white shirt, H&M; white pleather sneakers, H&M;

I would like to get an actual suit for this costume, but it is a little more than I want to spend, and the store downtown doesn’t have it in stock (H&M doesn’t have online shopping in Canada). Instead I think I will get her the jersey blazer, which is less expensive and she’s more likely to wear it again. I’ll pair it with the grey Old Navy leggings she already has. Any white shirt will be fine so I’ll prob just get the cheapest one I can find in store, and the red bowtie and white pocket square I will make myself. The biggest question rn is the shoes; they should OBVIOUSLY be white, but there aren’t a lot of white shoes in stores here at this time of year. The H&M sneakers might work but they are super ugly, and while she’d probably wear the white Vans a lot, they are more than I want to spend right now. I miiiiiiight make her some white leather shoes? They would need to have waterproof soles, but I have some crêpe rubber sole material I’ve been itching to try out, so depending on how much white leather I have on hand that’s an option as well.

I think one of my favourite things about not working are the quiet, lazy mornings I get to spend with just Gwen, when Taylor is at work and Sym has already left for school. Of course, she is two-almost-three years old so they aren’t literally quiet; most days she wakes me up by yelling “ma. MA. MAAAAAA!” from her room, and I when I get up I usually find she’s pulled all the linens off her bed, or thrown all her books off the shelf, or emptied the contents of her pajama/sock/underwear* drawer all over the floor. She’s usually naked; I usually have to play a game of find-the-soggy-diaper.

Once I have her up our morning ritual is she gets to watch a VERY SMALL amount of one of her shows (Yo Gabba Gabba, Pee-wee’s Playhouse or her new fave, Steven Universe) and have a granola bar while I drink my coffee and go through all the notifications & emails I got overnight. Next we get dressed and take Georgie for her walk, and when we get back from the park we have breakfast. Often by this time it’s close to ten and breakfast is more like brunch, and today Gwen, who is in a non-eating phase, refused to have anything. So I had pie for brunch. It’s fine, I’m an adult.

I’m not sure if I’ve mentioned it but I’ve booked a new daycare client to start at the end of this month, but just two days a week so I will still have some quiet mornings with Gwen.

*Gwen is still in diapers but I bought a bunch of cute lil underpants in anticipation of potty training. I’m actually attempting it this week by going cold turkey off diapers when we’re at home/awake, and bribing her with mini eggs. Gwen knows when she has to pee and will sit on the potty, but she won’t actually use it. Instead she holds her pee and tells me she wants a diaper, and then tries to negotiate with me for a “choc.”

Sunday roasted potato, carrot & butternut squash soup
Monday sweet & sour chicken and vegetable stirfry with rice
Tuesday breakfast for dinner
Wednesday cheesy baked tortellini and salad
Thursday POUTINE NIGHT/leftovers for Gwen
Friday honey & soy glazed salmon with broccoli & rice
Saturday TBD ofc

Can I talk for a minute about last week’s lasagne? IT WAS SO GOOD. In the end I didn’t really follow a recipe (do I ever?), partly because I didn’t want to deal with cooking ground beef (I’m still having that problem where I get grossed out by raw meat), and also I wanted to use up some leftovers. I made the meat filling with leftover chicken, chorizo, tomato sauce, roasted garlic and roasted peppers (I think that’s everything). It turned out really delicious, even Sym liked it and she’s super picky. The only thing I would change is I tried to make my life easier by using those oven-ready noodles that don’t need to be boiled, and I feel like they didn’t cook fully, especially on the top layer. Next time I will use regular noodles.

I planned this week’s menu on my own after Taylor went to bed and tbh I am feeling like I’m in a rut already, like rn I have rice on there twice? Is that lazy of me? Maybe, but I cannot think of anything else haha.

On Monday I took Gwen up to Capilano Suspension Bridge Park in North Vancouver. I was a little daunted by the cost; adult admission to the park is almost $40 with tax, but as a BC resident I was able to get an annual membership at no additional cost so I figured it would be worth it. I’d never actually been up there before but there is a free shuttle bus that stops a block and a half from our house so I was like WHAT THE HECK. I had originally wanted Taylor to come with us as well but he’s back to working nights, and plus he is PETRIFIED of heights so I’m guessing that a freaky-ass wobbly bridge stretching over a canyon isn’t high on his must-do activities list.

Since we went on a weekday morning I was hoping that it wouldn’t be too busy but the nice weather meant it was pretty packed. The shuttle bus was full before the last stop on the way there and there were tons of people on the bridge. It was pretty wobbly; I’m not sure if more people make it more wobbly but that thing felt like Galloping Gertie! I was a little worried Gwen would be flipped out but she wasn’t afraid at all, and happily tromped across bridge with no hesitation. She was actually more scared of the totem poles in the park and wouldn’t go anywhere near them.

After crossing the canyon we walked through the Treetop Adventure, past the trout ponds and along the boardwalk through the forest. Gwen went up and down tons of stairs and over all the little bridges on her own, but after a couple of hours of walking she was getting pretty tired and grumpy. I knew she was in no mood to check out the Cliffwalk, but she also refused to go in the gift shop and was chanting “home. home. home.” That was a pretty clear indicator that she was 100% done by that point so we just hopped back on the shuttle bus and headed back downtown.

Overall I really liked the park; there was a lot to see and do- we were there for hours and still didn’t do everything, and for locals who can get the annual pass it’s actually pretty reasonably priced. If I go once a month for the next year that’s only $3.33 a visit! I plan on going a lot (maybe next time on a day with less flawless weather when it’s not as busy) and hope to find a way to convince Taylor and Sym to come too, possibly for the Canyon Lights at Christmastime.

Sunday potato & corn chowder with bacon
Monday chicken with white wine garlic sauce; roasted potatoes, carrots and butternut squash; butter lettuce salad with cherry tomatoes
Tuesday lasagne
Wednesday chili with cornbread muffins
Thursday POUTINE NIGHT/leftovers for Gwen
Friday mini pizzas
Saturday TBD ofc

Sunday’s soup was made to use up a bunch of leftovers/things about to go bad, and tbh I didn’t love it. Too much corn, not enough potatoes. // About once a year I decide to make something with squash and I guess today is the day. I’ve been trying to branch out with some of these meals, and make something different from scratch each week. This week it is Tuesday’s lasagne, so if anyone has a good recipe for one please send me a link so I don’t have to try and fudge my way through it! // Friday we are having mini pizzas since we never had them last week- I never even bought the ingredients! Last week’s meals were a total disarray; as it turned out there wasn’t enough tortellini so I made mac & cheese again (and redeemed myself but not fucking it up this time, haha), so we had leftovers of that on Tuesday and did breakfast for dinner on Wednesday, thus postponing the sliders YET AGAIN until Friday. The onions were still good, the buttermilk was NOT. Those baked onion rings were kind of a bust anyway. Only about 1/3 of them were good, and even the good ones were a little dry.

Yesterday was beautiful out so instead of doing stuff around the house I took Gwen to Stanley Park/the playground at Second Beach. I didn’t even realize that it was the last day of summer. Anyway I was so tired when we got back that I couldn’t be bothered to do anything. I couldn’t even be bothered to make my to-do list. I mean, I did a little work on etsy orders, but not as much as I could/should have, and I didn’t do any housework. OOPS. Today I woke up to unfinished banners, piles of laundry, mountains of dirty dishes and toys strewn everywhere. Not cool, but I busted my butt all morning and managed to get most of the mess cleaned up before nap time.
